For most of us buying a property abroad is a stressful and often daunting prospect. Everybody that you deal with is either employed by somebody else or looking after their own interests. With the number of unscrupulous solicitors that have emerged in Spain over the years, many people have found that their own representative can cause them concern. Estate agents are employed only to find buyers for properties and to get the best possible price for them. They can generally only offer you properties that they themselves have been instructed to sell, meaning that you may miss out on better quality or value for money properties in the same area!
Finding a suitable property is just the beginning. If you haven’t already organised your finance, you will need to so quickly. An estate agent or developer may push you in the direction of a favoured lender where they earn even more commission and where you could end-up paying inflated arrangement fees/ account opening fees/ interest rates.
In order to purchase the property you will have to have an N.I.E. number. This involves going to the local police station in the area where you are buying, in order to register your application. Depending on the area of purchase, the queues can be very long and this can take a whole day. Once you have completed the registration forms you will need to return them to the police. Six to eight weeks later (this can take longer), you will need to pick-up your documents from the same police station.
